How to Set Up a Practice Space at Home
Hi there Rhythm Maker!
So you’ve taken the first step and committed to your music journey. The next big step is setting up a practice space at home. Here are a few key elements to take into consideration when you do so:
- Space:
The room that you choose to practice in should be comfortable with enough room for you to move around your instrument. Some instruments, such as trumpets, drums and cellos, require more space allocation to ensure accurate playing. Your practice area should also have minimal distractions as you would want to be able to zone into your practice mode easily.
- Lighting:
An adequately lit room is essential while practicing, because if you cannot read your music or see your instrument, you will be making unnecessary inaccuracies and become quite frustrated. Natural sunlight is ideal for some people when reading and practicing music. You should also utilize a lamp if the room’s lights are not enough.
- Instrument accessories:
Although not necessary in the early stages of learning, you will want to equip your practice area with music accessories that will enhance your practice time. Below is a short list of suggestions:
metronome to help with timing,
a comfortable chair/ bench for sitting while practicing or taking breaks
music stand as a holder while reading sheet music
pencil and eraser to help with identifying notes
All the best on your musical journey!
Musically yours,
